About Botanics & You

Discover the passion behind our mission for natural wellness and herbalism

How Botanics & You began

Botanics & You was born from a desire for calm, nature, and meaning. In our busy, digital world, it’s easy to lose touch with nature - and along with it, centuries-old knowledge of herbs and plants. These were once a natural part of life: for food, care, and relief from everyday ailments. This knowledge hasn’t disappeared; it’s simply faded into the background. Botanics & You is my way of bringing that connection back into focus, with attention, nuance, and respect for both tradition and science.

My story

My story

I’m Annika Wessels, founder of Botanics & You.

In the Netherlands, I lived the life that was expected of me. Beautiful moments alternated with less pleasant ones, but there was always that nagging feeling that something was missing. I often felt restless, constantly searching for deeper meaning and purpose.

Call it restlessness or a longing for adventure, but I had to go-to see the world and explore new horizons. And then, during a holiday in Scandinavia, I felt it. This. What “this” exactly was, I couldn’t put into words at the time, but for the first time, I truly felt at ease. As if I had come home.

When we emigrated to Sweden in 2022, everything fell into place. Here, I no longer need to travel the world to find “something”; the calm and the nature are simply here. Even though we live in a lovely villa “in town,” nature is always just around the corner. It requires a different pace, a different focus, a different way of living. Slowing down wasn’t automatic - it was a learning process. And it was precisely that process that changed the way I view health and well-being.

Life lessons through illness

Life lessons through illness

Health became, for us, not an abstract concept but a raw reality. My husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2012 and bladder cancer in 2017. Surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy followed. Western medicine has been - and continues to be - immeasurably valuable. Without modern medical care, we simply wouldn’t be here.

It was precisely through this experience that I began to ask: what can we do ourselves, alongside medical treatments? Not as a replacement, but as support. Preventively and complementarily, with attention to the body as a whole. We live in a time when we quickly reach for a pill, often without stopping to listen to what our body is trying to tell us. At the same time, our healthcare system and caregivers are under immense pressure.

For me, it became increasingly clear that knowledge about nutrition, plants, lifestyle, and self-care is not a luxury - it’s a form of responsibility, something everyone can apply in their own way.

My herbal journey

My herbal journey

We live in a world that moves fast. We take pills in abundance, scroll endlessly through social media, and rarely pause to consider what we’re actually putting into our bodies - or why. Health issues are often treated as isolated problems that need to be “fixed” as quickly as possible. But nature has so much to offer—we’ve just forgotten a bit of it.

For me, the real turning point came when Scent & Spice crossed my path. The course Making Sense of Herbs felt like a revelation. It showed me that nature and science can be combined in a very meaningful way. I learned to look at plants with both an open mind and common sense. That was the beginning of my journey into the world of herbs and plants.

What I learned along the way completely changed the way I view plants. I deepened my knowledge through Lieve Galle’s year-long wild foraging program, complemented by books, webinars, and workshops from international herbalists. The more I learned, the greater my respect grew - not only for the power of plants but also for their complexity.

A new perspective on health

Medical science is impressive, yet we still have much to learn. Many pharmaceuticals are based on isolated compounds from plants. This makes sense from a research perspective, but it doesn’t tell the whole story. A plant consists of a complex interplay of substances that can enhance, soften, or complement one another. It is precisely this synergy that makes plants so fascinating—and at the same time so challenging (and costly) to fully understand scientifically. Folk medicine and traditional herbal knowledge are therefore not outdated ideas, but valuable sources of insight that deserve careful preservation and continued study.

The more I learned, the clearer it became: herbs can be subtle, yet also incredibly powerful. And for that reason, they should be used with knowledge, care, and restraint.

Every step in my learning journey brought more nuance, more respect, and above all, a deeper sense of responsibility. I discovered that nature and science are not opposed—they complement each other. Traditional knowledge and modern science can strengthen one another, provided we are willing to observe carefully, keep learning, and question our assumptions.

This interplay forms the foundation of Botanics & You.

"My passion is to spark curiosity about herbs and plants - their medicinal properties and how to use them safely to support your health and well-being in everyday life."
